Immigration
from Carmelo Mallia

The EU especially Malta and other Mediterrean states are facing big problems through immigration. An immediate and collective effort by all member states should be carried out to stop or at least reduce the illegal activities which take place south of our island.

There should be some form of negotiations with those African states from where the immigrants are coming. It is obvious that there are unscrupulous, powerful and organized criminals who are making a lot of money out of this human trafficking. The United Nations, particularly all European States should take measures to break this chain of arrogant and irresponsible behaviour as in some member states the problem is getting out of control. Though putting their lives at risk millions are waiting to move north for a better life.

It is a known fact that due to low birth rates and other demographic factors, Europe including Malta, will be facing problems to find workers for its work force in the near future. Immigration through the proper channels is one of the solutions. A step in the right direction is the EU directive to its member states wherein it states that Employers should not employ illegal immigrants. This abuse has been going on for years. This directive is important to avoid the exploitation of the workers, to control black economy and above all for local citizens to compete fairly to enter the labour market.

Once the immigrants are settled in a particular state, measures should be put in place to integrate these people in society and participate legally in the work force. They should be informed about their obligations to the states, that is, pay their taxes and social security contributions, so that they will have a right to health and social services etc. It is important for them to earn a pension when they retire to guarantee their income security and avoid poverty.

Poverty is the root of all evil. If the poverty problem is not eradicated once and for all then I am afraid that illegal immigration will persist. The current depression is contributing more to existing trouble and the distribution of wealth between nations is something that cannot be ignored any longer. It is sad to say that the world, including Europe is heading for unpleasant times. Ethnical, religious, social and economical levels will all be affected to the detriment of all concerned.
